Built on the former grounds of Emperor Korei’s Kuroda Ioto Palace, Horakuji Temple is said to have been founded by Shotoku Taishi. In the panel painting with the inscription of August 1459, there is an image of Horakuji Temple's many halls in its golden days. As many as 25 halls stood during the Muromachi period but most were destroyed by war fire and now only one remains. The principal image of worship is the Koyasu Jizo Bosatsu Standing Statue. The temple possesses other old Buddha statues such as the Sogyo Jizo Bosatsu Sitting Statue (late Muromachi period).
